For example, in the world of hip-hop/rap, modern rappers like Kendrick Lamar and Chance The Rapper, in the past have incorporate sounds of jazz in their songs and albums. Through my own listening experience, I frequently come across popular music artists who use sounds of jazz in their songs. People have argued that pop musicians have often used sounds of jazz in their pop music to make their pop music seem more sophisticated and experimental. I think the more interesting idea may be the reasons behind pop musicians like The 1975 choosing to incorporate sounds of jazz into their pop music. Maybe “Mine” might be The 1975’s attempt at creating a tribute to jazz as a genre.Īt the end of the day, as listeners, it may not matter to us whether we choose to consider The 1975’s music as “jazz” or “not jazz”. The sounds heard in “Mine” are similar to what one might hear in a traditional vocal jazz ballad. The 1975’s use of jazz in their pop music brings to attention the issue of why pop artists choose to include jazz musical elements within their pop music recordings. Last year, The 1975 released their third album A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships which received many positive reviews and featured two jazz-influenced recordings, “Sincerity Is Scary" and “Mine”. They are a commercially successful UK band known for experimenting with different musical genres and shape-shifting album after album.
One of my favourite bands of the year has to be The 1975.
